Do Doctors get paid too much?

Depending on where you live in the world, your doctor can be paid in different ways.  In some countries doctors are paid by the government, in others they are paid for by you or an insurance company.  How much do Doctors make?  Doctor’s salaries are highly variable depending on how they are paid, how many hours they work and what type of Doctor they are.  My estimate for any full time fully qualified doctor would range from $150,000 to over $1,000,000 per annum.  People often complain that doctors earn too much money, particularly in places where doctors are paid by the government, I mean couldn’t our tax dollars be better spent?

Doctor’s train for a minimum of 6 years unpaid as they study, they then must go through the grueling process of internship/residency working excessive hours in a hospital and often making below the median salary.  Doctors then need to train in their specific specialty which can take up to 10 years full time for a surgical specialty and no less than 6 years for a medical specialty.

I find it interesting that the general public has an issue for a highly skilled and highly trained individual with at least 14 years of training (from medical school to fellowship) with the responsibility of keeping people alive making the money that they do, but don’t seem to blink an eye at the amount actors, CEO’s, directors or politicians earn annually (substantially more than doctors).  Doctors are highly trained and have a significant amount of responsibility and in my opinion they deserve their salary as long as they are performing their duties to the best of their ability and not doing anything society would perceive as unethical or immoral.
